Let’s Play A Little Mixing Game

What if you decided to write a thriller like Gone Girl and mix it with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Or, let’s say you write Misery but with a bit of 50 Shades of Grey? Or, recreate Gone With The Wind and add zombies. Wait, it’s kinda been done.

I just watched the film Anna and the Apocalypse at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival. It’s the story of a zombie apocalypse in the small town of Little Haven. Oh, and it’s happening during Christmas. The film comes out later this winter. Think Glee meets Night of the Living Dead. And if you think those two wouldn’t work, please watch the movie and tell me then.

The lesson of the day is, mix genres. Try different things. Be like a fusion chef and see what storytelling ingredients might work together. If anything, you might create a strange combination that’s fun to read.

I'm blessed. Most of my professional career, almost 20 years, I've spent as a journalist. Some of it was in print, a little in television, but most of it in radio. I've worked with some wonderfully talented producers and directors in those two decades. It would take pages to elaborate on all of the experiences I've had as a reporter, producer and host. Needless to say they include opportunities talking with leaders of state, religious leaders, civic leaders, writers, artists and entertainers. The last couple decades have been a lot of fun. But, the next couple decades will be far better.
